Cooroy Gymnast Wins Three Golds at National Titles

Cooroy gymnast, Finlay Jones, achieved one of his goals this year which was to qualify for his first National Gymnastics Championships. The competition was the culmination of ten years of training and being selected onto the Queensland State Team for the competition at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne. The two week event saw almost 1500 of Australia’s best competitors in the five gym sports vie for national titles.

On the first day of the mens two day competition, Finlay rallied together with his Queensland team mates to win the Level 7 Open Australian team title. The Queenslanders were clear winners of the event beating their rivals by over 7 points. The Cooroy gymnast was instrumental in the win with a day one high score 1.435 in front of the competition and contributing five out of six scores towards the team combined tally.

On the second day of their event, gymnasts were looking to bank a second round of consistent competition scores for the prestigious ‘all around’ title and the six individual apparatus championships that were up for grabs. Finlay was able to put together another consistent round sticking five out of six events to win the Level 7 Open Australian Championship with a score of 144.796 over the two days.

Finlay stepped up to the challenge with another Australian Championship on parallel bars and a close second place on rings missing another win by just .067 of a point. Finlay had two other top ten finishes, with a fourth place on high bar and a seventh place on floor.

Noosa Gymnast Wins Australian Title

Noosa Gymnast Wins Australian Title

Noosa Gymnast Kyle McCartney has returned from the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne with an Australian Title and three other awards.

Competing at the end of May over two days at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Kyle was the first representative for the Cooroy Gymnastics Club to compete for the Queensland State Team at Nationals.

Kyle won his National title on Pommel finishing a clear 1st and scoring well on the pommel over the two days of competition. The pommel is probably the most technical of all gymnastics apparatus for men. He kept his routine clean and was rewarded for his consistency with the highest scores on both days.

Kyle finished on the podium with a 2nd place on floor which is his favourite event. His floor routine was packed with difficulty including layout triple twist as well as sticking his double back and front somersaults. Kyle also finished in third place on parallel bars contributing to his overall achievement.

Competing over the six apparatus with such consistency over two days of competition saw Kyle awarded 3rd place in the all around division. His all around two day score of 138.06 ranks him 14th in Australia amongst our Senior International mens devision despite him turning 18 just days before the competition. This is a great achievement for the Sunshine Coast Grammar student who is also completing year 12.

Kyle has now been short listed for an international open tour at the end of the year where he hopes to compete at his first international event.

It has been a great effort from both Kyle and his Coaches Rico and Jeff.
